Brad tore out of the driveway in the direction the Escalade had headed.  If he was right, good ol’ suave-guy from the bar was driving that SUV.  He hammered the steering wheel again and again with the side of his fist, rocking back and forth, slamming his head and back against the seat.  He screamed, “I am such a FUCK-UP; WHY, WHY didn’t I come back earlier – just a few minutes?”  He let out a large breath and said softly, “I shouldn’t have come to Boulder.” Continue reading

Neil slid under the covers trying to not wake Samantha.  She snuggled close to him, breath quiet and steady.

Sleep would be elusive.  He concentrated on slow breathing, hoping to bring his pulse down to a normal range.  He was furious with Brad and furious with himself that he allowed Brad to disrupt his family’s life with his sordid habits.

“Gin!” Neil laid down his runs and sets.

Cassie threw her cards on the sofa table between them, “That’s not fair!  You always win, Daddy.”

“Not true.  You won a game last week.  Besides, what does fair have to do with anything?”  His eyes twinkled as he suppressed a mischievous grin.  He wanted to reach out and muss her hair, but restrained himself – that would lead to an all-out war. Continue reading
